VCU MTNA collegiate chapter was established in the summer of 2013 by VCU keyboard coordinator, Dr. Yin Zheng and piano performance major, Savannah Hatcher. The organization was established with the goal of creating and supporting performing events, presenting scholarly research and presentations, developing professional collaboration and networking, and facilitating community music teaching by exchange activities led by the VCU Department of Music.
