Fee:  $35.00 per student

Safety Guidelines:

  • Only one parent/guardian may accompany each student participant, no other family members may attend.
  • There will be no audience allowed in the judging room
  • Entrance and exit will be the side door of the church only, NOT the front door please. There will be signs to guide you from the parking area to the side door.
  • Each student is responsible for bringing 2 copies of the judging sheet (emailed to teachers in advance) with them to the Festival. The top portion must be completely filled out by the student. Teachers should help double check this before the festival.

The purpose of the RMTA Sonata/Sonatina Festival is the following:

  • To be inclusive for all types of students of different levels and backgrounds, giving them a performance opportunity in front of three judges and an audience.
  • To encourage in-depth study of Sonatas/Sonatinas.
  • To gain further knowledge and insight from judges’ comments.

Repertory Guidelines:

  • Students will perform one memorized movement of a Sonata or Sonatina from any historical period. No repeats are allowed, with the exception that a Minuet/Trio/D.C. Minuet (with no internal repeats) will be considered one movement.
  • No arrangements or simplified versions may be performed.
  • Photocopies of commercially published music are not allowed. Teachers will be required to sign a copyright release form and mail it along with the Application Form.

Student Classifications and Time Limits: (Time limits will be enforced by a timekeeper and students should be prepared to stop when time is called.)

Certificates and Honors Recital:

  • Certificates will be given to all participating students
  • Judges may select a first, second and third place in each level, with up to two honorable mentions. The judges will determine how many winners are chosen.
  • Winners are invited to perform at an Honors Recital on Sunday at 3 pm at St. Luke Lutheran Church (refer to calendar of events for details), where the winners will be presented with medals engraved with “RMTA Sonata Festival” on the back.
